Clayton County Families Consider Enrolling at Utopian AcademyDSC_7242

More than 150 people attended Open House meetings in March to learn more about enrolling in grades 6-8 at Utopian Academy, the state’s first public charter school for the arts.

Nearly 100 seats at Utopian Academy are open to Clayton County students for the 2016-17 school year. The enrollment deadline for new students was April 1. A lottery will be held if there are more applicants than seats available.

“Utopian Academy for the Arts is an awesome place to get an education,” said Ms. Yvette Gates, Utopian Academy’s Title Program Coordinator and Parent Liaison. Gates also has an eighth grader at Utopian. “It has a small family-like environment and a challenging curriculum that allows students to explore their interests.”

Scholars can take classes in dance, visual arts, music, culinary arts, broadcasting, and editing as they tackle core classes. Students use their creativity to demonstrate subject mastery. At Utopian, book reports are expressed as short films and essays are written as movie scripts. The school also has a student-run Internet radio and television station.

“I love it here,” said Brittani Gates, 13. “You get the attention that you need, and you are also able to stimulate your talents. I have taken visual arts, dance, audio-visual and culinary arts classes. I enjoyed all of them.”

Returning students and their siblings will be given enrollment priority. Applications are available online at utopianacademy.com.
